Hungry Planet What The World Eats By Peter Menzel

Hungry Planet What The World Eats By Peter Menzel

Someone posted this article What A Week Of Groceries Looks Like Around The World on Facebook, and my first reaction was "We haven't bought a week of groceries in a long time". Our family is one of those that belong in the 'Eat-Out Culture' where at least 95% of our meals are taken outside the home.

Things we buy when (and if) we go grocery shopping :  Milk, fruits, shampoo, soap, detergent, toothbrush, yakult

Award winning photographer Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluision visited 24 countries and photographed 30 families, showing their weekly food supplies. This photo collection explores the different eating habits around the world, showing us their diet and lifestyle.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
Close to home, in Madhya Pradesh, India, the Patkar family spend $39.27 a week.
I can see they are planning to use lots of red onions (which I am not very sure of how to use in cooking).

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
In Yomitan Village, Japan, the Matsuda family spend $214.26 a week. I'm feeling pleased that they use the Japanese curry in a box too (bottom right of table). I also love how this picture depicts that Japanese people live for a long time.

China: The Dong family of Beijing. Food expenditure for one week: 1,233.76 Yuan or $155.06. Favorite foods: fried shredded pork with sweet and sour sauce.
Dong family in Beijing, China spend $155.06 for one week. Think they are going to have a nice steaming hotpot as I can see the cooker.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
In Kuwait, The Al Haggan family (and their two Nepali servants) spend $221.45 a week. Can't recognise most of the food they use. Ooh can you spot Pita bread ?

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
Here is the Batsuuri family in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia spending $40.02 a week. I think they can't buy too much meat because it has to fit inside that small fridge in the back.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
The Manzo family of Palermo spend 214.36 Euros $260.11 a week in Sicily, Italy. Wonder if all those loaves of bread were on discount. Also it's Italy, so I see bags of pasta and canned tomatoes. 6 bottle of sweet drinks and 2 bottles of water?

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
Cuernavaca, Mexico where the Casales family spend $189.09 a week. Look at how much Coke they drink. But they also balance it out with a whole table of fruits.

Guatemala: The Mendozas of Todos Santos - Food expenditure for one week: 573 Quetzales or $75.70. Family Recipe: Turkey Stew and Susana Perez Matias's Sheep Soup.
In Guatemala, The Mendozas spend $75.70 a week. I love their matching outfits. By looking at the amount of carrots and potatos, I think they must be making stews.

Lets take a look at the other end of the spectrum.

Ecuador: The Ayme family of Tingo. Food expenditure for one week: $31.55. Family recipe: Potato soup with cabbage.
The Ayme family in Tingo, Ecuador spend $31.55 a week and look at how many mouths they feed. The key to making bananas last is that you buy them in varying degrees of ripeness. The green ones will turn yellow as the week progresses so no bananas spoil and you have fresh, ripe bananas everyday.

Mali: The Natomos of Kouakourou - Food expenditure for one week: 17,670 francs or $26.39. Family Recipe: Natomo Family Rice Dish.
The Natomos in Mali spend $26.39 a week. Milk for the babies and lots of rice and beans for the rest.

Bhutan: The Namgay family of Shingkhey Village. Food expenditure for one week: 224.93 ngultrum or $5.03. Family recipe: Mushroom, cheese and pork.
I shall end off with Bhutan, the happiest country in the world. The Namgay family in Shingkhey Village spend $5.03 each week. They have much more mouths to feed. Perhaps they have some more food which is homegrown not shown in the picture?

Hungry Planet What The World Eats

Doing research for this post has opened my eyes to see that I am really fortunate to live in Singapore. There is plenty of meat and vegetables and pretty much anything to eat here. I also see that planning goes into creating meals and thus grocery lists. I usually pop by to NTUC or ShengSiong to buy the ingredients whenever I want to cook something. That would be quite time consuming method if I were to be cooking everyday for a family of 5 or 6. So many different choices and lifestyles we have around the world.

What do you buy when grocery shopping and how much do you spend ??
I would love to hear from you.

Grub Singapore Review
#grubsg screen of live feed from instagram

Grub just opened in May this year at my beloved Bishan Park. I heard lots of friends saying that the queue for a table was insane long, so I didn't pay them a visit till now. The favorite thing I like is that they have this screen at the alfresco area that flashes up pictures. Initially I thought they just showed the food that is on the menu, but on further inspection, I saw that they are instagrams posted by patrons of grub. So i posted a picture of our group with a hashtag #grubsg. Halfway through the meal I spotted the picture that I had posted on the screen !! Excitedly I ran to take a picture of it and thus the next picture is a picture of me taking a picture of it.

Grub Singapore Review
taking a picture of our picture on the screen

I feel this was the most exciting part of the night. Makes it a memorable experience and like we were playing a part in everyone else's dining experience. I highly encourage you to hashtag #grubsg when you are there and look out for your picture as it comes up on the screen.

Grub Singapore Review
alfresco dining area

Grub doesn't take reservations so you have to go there and put your name down. They also don't allow you to queue outside the restaurant, thus we took the time to enjoy a nice stroll around the park. Was surprised that we only had to wait for about half an hour before receiving a phone call saying that our table was ready. I enjoyed that we sat at the alfresco area as it was a cooling night with a beautiful breeze. They have an indoor seating area which would be suitable for hot afternoons.

Grub Singapore Review
Iced honey lime juice
The homemade iced honey lime juice was refreshing. I especially like the smell which reminded me of my favorite dessert Ice Jelly.

Mushroom Risotto
Grub Singapore Review
King salmon on top of risotto

Was unimpressed with their risotto as the look of it just doesn't seem appetizing to me and it was quite salty too. On the other hand, the burgers are a much better choice.

Grub Singapore Review
Fish burger
There is a very generous piece of fish on the fish burger. Probably the best looking of all the things we ordered because it looked like a sumptuous portion.

Grub Singapore ReviewGrub Singapore Review
I decided on their signature Grub Burger and it was pretty good. I would definitely order the burger again. Then came dessert time ! We just can't resist our sweet tooth. Everything sounded really yummy so we ordered 3 desserts to share.

Grub Singapore Review
Chocolate pot with spicy crumble

This is a chocolate pot with a spicy crumble. I really loved the chocolate texture and the spiciness of the crumble added a surprising element to the dessert. When eating it together, there is a lingering warmth left in the mouth.

Grub Singapore Review
Waffle with banana, salty caramel, chocolate saue

I am predisposed to bananas so I really loved this banana waffle served with salted caramel and chocolate sauce. The waffle texture is the way I like it, abit crispy on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside. See how big are the bananas. Could enjoy a big chunk with every bite.

Grub Singapore Review
Churros

Someone was eager to try the churros but I didn't find it especially delicious as the texture and flavor weren't really to my liking. Haven't eaten good churros in Singapore before.

The alfresco dining area within Macritchie Reservoir gives you a relaxing feeling that will definitely take your mind off the daily tensions and stress. Mookata Upper Thomson Thai Me Up

Mookata Upper Thomson

Was really excited to see this new Mookata stall because my family have never tried it before and it would be fun to eat it together since it's traditionally a gathering food in Thailand. I'm not good at remembering stall names but this one is quite quirky... 'Thai Me Up".

Mookata Upper Thomson
Look out for the signboard

I liked this write up that is written by the boss of the shop. Gave a heartwarming feeling.

Mookata Upper Thomson
heartfelt message from Andrew
Mookata literally means pork skillet in Thai.
It is one of the favourite get-together meals in Thailand.
What attracted me was the bond it creates among people.
Friends would criticise the food/chilli together or love it.
Family members would boast about "ah"  I can  make a better one.
Whether good or bad, there is communication.
I really hope to bring this harmony between you and your loved ones!
and of course good food.
Thus, I present to you, Mookata

My dad was so creative. Because the Mookata soup gets quite salty after the meat juices flow in, and also the egg is quite hard to eat when beaten in the soup, my dad suggested pouring the egg over the cooked meat to make an omelette. Best idea ever ! I posted a video of it on Instagram.

Chan Jin Mookata ! Which means I eat Mookata in Thai. hehheh I hope I remember correctly :p

Overall the food is not great in my opinion, but definitely something new to try out close to home :)

Fat Boys Thomson Review

Fat Boys Thomson Review

Fat Boys Thomson Review
look out for this
This isn't my first time eating here. Fat Boys is my Upper Thomson go-to place for burgers now. Pretty much my anywhere go-to place when I crave burgers because it's conveniently located. Love that there is straight bus for my friends to come here for dinner. 410 from Bishan. 163 from Toa Payoh or Sengkang. 166/162/132/130 from Ang Mo Kio. 165 from Hougang. Just to make my point that it is very accessible.

Fat Boys Thomson Review
Fat Boys Interior

They use a black, red and white theme which can never really go wrong. Creative direction chosen by men probably? The layout is modern while the music playing gives it a retro American diner feel similar to what you'd expect at Billy Bombers. Overall the ambience is good as it doesn't come off too tacky. Very acceptable as a hangout place for me.

The menu is so filled with words I had challenge reading through it all. Ended up choosing my burger based on the names because I was too hungry. We selected the Fat Basterd and Swiss Shroom. I'm not very particular about the different types of buns and cheeses, but I might create my very own burger by adding different things together the next time.

Fat Boys Thomson Review Fat Boys Thomson Review

Here's the Fat Basterd. Double beef chuck goodness. The juicy patties are perfection. Juicy and just the right flavor. #nuffsaid #justeat

Fat Boys Thomson Review
Fat Boys Fat Basterd

Here's the Swiss Shroom. Didn't manage to get a picture of the juicy Shitake Mushrooms hidden under that holey looking piece of cheese but they were really generous with the mushrooms. I really liked the wholemeal bun which it came in too. Or was it the garlic aioli sauce spread on the bun? It was very tasty to me.

Fat Boys Thomson Review
Fat Boys Swiss Shroom
Kinda feel bad cos 3 of us shared 2 burgers. But the Fat Basterd really is too much for one person to eat. You can choose the Wimpy version of it, which has one beef patty instead of two. Not that I'm on a diet or anything but the portion really is quite big and comes with fries too. Overeating makes me feel so uncomfortable and bloated so have to follow what my body needs. Don't want to end up looking like the Fat Boys mascot anyway who just looks unhappy. Healthy body is a happy body :)
